Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
What is it?
The Emergency First Aid at Work qualification provides the essential skills needed to respond to common workplace first aid emergencies.
Training includes CPR, casualty assessment, choking, bleeding, shock and the management of an unresponsive casualty.
Who is it suitable for?
EFAW is suitable for individuals and organisations requiring workplace first aid provision, particularly where a first aid needs assessment identifies a lower level of workplace risk.
Candidates must be at least 16 years old at the time of assessment.
Typical Format
6 hours of learning, usually delivered over one day.
Face-to-face and blended learning options are available.
First Aid at Work (FAW)
What is it?
First Aid at Work provides more comprehensive workplace first aid training for those taking on wider first aid responsibilities.
Alongside the core emergency skills covered within EFAW, the course develops the ability to respond to a broader range of injuries and illnesses.
Who is it suitable for?
FAW is suitable for designated workplace first aiders and organisations where the first aid needs assessment identifies the need for more comprehensive first aid provision.
Candidates must be at least 16 years old at the time of assessment.
Typical Format
18 hours of learning, normally delivered over three days.
Face-to-face and blended learning options are available.
Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA)
What is it?
Emergency Paediatric First Aid provides essential emergency first aid skills for those responsible for children and infants.
Training includes paediatric CPR, choking, bleeding, shock and responding to an unresponsive infant or child.
Who is it suitable for?
EPFA is suitable for individuals and organisations where staff may be responsible for children or infants and require emergency paediatric first aid skills.
Candidates must be at least 16 years old at the time of assessment.
Paediatric First Aid (PFA)
What is it?
Paediatric First Aid provides more comprehensive first aid training for those responsible for the care of children and infants.
The course develops the skills required to respond to a wider range of paediatric illnesses, injuries and emergencies.
Who is it suitable for?
PFA is suitable for individuals and organisations where staff have responsibility for children and infants and require a more comprehensive level of paediatric first aid training.
Candidates must be at least 16 years old at the time of assessment.
Combined First Aid Qualifications
For organisations where staff are responsible for both adults and children, combined first aid qualifications can provide a more efficient way to meet both workplace and paediatric training requirements.
Combined Emergency Paediatric First Aid & Emergency First Aid at Work
This course combines Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA) and Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), providing emergency first aid skills for adults, children and infants within a single course.
Who is it suitable for?
Staff who work with both adults and children and require emergency-level first aid skills across both groups.
This can be particularly useful for leisure centres, schools, sports organisations and other environments where staff have responsibilities for a mixed age range.
Candidates must be at least 16 years old at the time of assessment.
Combined Paediatric First Aid & First Aid at Work
This course combines Paediatric First Aid (PFA) and First Aid at Work (FAW), providing more comprehensive first aid training covering adults, children and infants.
Who is it suitable for?
Staff with wider first aid responsibilities who work with both adults and children, particularly where an organisation's first aid needs assessment identifies the need for comprehensive workplace and paediatric provision.
Typical Format
22 hours of learning. Normally delivered over three days.
Blended First Aid Training
Where available, blended learning can provide organisations with greater flexibility when arranging staff training.
Candidates complete part of the learning online before attending a practical face-to-face session to develop and demonstrate the required first aid skills.
This can help reduce the amount of time staff need to spend away from normal duties while maintaining the practical elements required by the qualification.
Blended delivery is available for selected Poolsmart first aid courses.
